Roumoult couldn’t focus. He was frustrated. He believed that Xavier's interest in his company was a rumor. But the threat was real. Unable to focus all day, he left work just before sundown. As he drove, he thought about the artifact. Dr. Payne hadn’t provided him with an update. He glanced in the rearview mirror. He didn’t see any suspicious cars or a sign that Angelus was following him. But he knew he was under surveillance.

Cranston House, New York

Once home, he checked on his kids, changed, and stepped into the kitchen. He picked up his favorite pan and smiled. Cooking gave him joy and relaxed him. He immersed himself in preparing dinner and forgot about everything. The aroma of the pasta spread and, as expected, drew the teenagers out of their caves.

“Dad…” said Cassidy and came and hugged him. He was happy she had put the game console aside and joined them for dinner.

He kissed her on her forehead. “Would you like some pasta?”

“Yes.”

He focused on cooking and added a bit more seasoning.

“Is it done yet?” Cassidy asked, standing with a plate beside him.

He regarded her. “When did you eat?”

“Doesn’t matter…I am hungry now.”

“Darling, did you have lunch?”

“No!”

“Cassidy, you need to eat on time.”

“Dad, I don’t need a lecture. I need food! Now!” she said, stamping her feet.
